REPEAT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE OFFENDER SENT TO PRISON


John Melvin Petersen, age 46, was sentenced to 16 months in State Prison after pleading "no contest" to Felony Criminal Threats and Misdemeanor Resisting Arrest.

The conviction arose from an incident on May 13, 2018 during which Petersen threatened his live-in girlfriend during a verbal argument.  Petersen told the victim that he would "Break her neck," and when he thought she might call 911 told her if she did he would "beat her."  Petersen has been convicted of Misdemeanor Domestic Violence in 1996, 1998, 2006 and 2017.  This is his first Felony Domestic Violence conviction.

The case was investigated by the El Dorado Sheriff's Office and prosecuted by Brett Swenson, a Deputy District Attorney assigned to the Special Victim's Unit.
