Welfare Fraud Lands Gardnerville Woman in County Jail

Posted: May 22, 2018

Destanee Janae Milligan, age 22, pled no contest and was found guilty of felony welfare fraud.  She was sentenced to 120 days in the county jail and ordered to pay $6,794.00 in restitution for benefits she obtained that she was not eligible for.

Between December of 2015 and December of 2016, Milligan claimed custody of a minor aged child, increasing the amount of aid she was eligible for and made other false statements under penalty of perjury in order to increase the amount of welfare she received.

The case was investigated and prosecuted by a Special Unit at the District Attorney's Office that collaborates with the Department of Health and Human Services in identifying and prosecuting welfare fraud.
